The previous record of 33.7 degrees was set in April 2004.
Both readings were taken at the Bendigo Airport which began taking records in 1991.
Bureau of Meteorology senior climatologist Blair Trewin said the high temperature was a record for the Bendigo area.
“Up until 1991 the Bendigo observations were taken at the prison,” he said.
“Today is also higher than any April temperature measured at that site.
“In northern Victoria the temperatures over the last two days have been unprecedented for April.
“Up until yesterday the highest temperature in Victoria [during April] was 37.8 degrees and we’ve had multiple locations in north western Victoria go above it yesterday and today.”
He said most locations north of the divide are going to go close or will break their April records.
