Bendigo South East College’s Academy of Creative Arts students will head to New York and Los Angeles in September to explore professional arts vocations and take part in workshops.
In an effort to raise funds, ACA artistic director Adam Lyon, manager Cynthia Holswoth and former Bendigo student Nelson Gardner will trek from BSE to Melbourne’s Victorian College of the Arts.
The trek will take the three walkers through Castlemaine, Elphinstone, Malmsbury, Kyneton, Woodend, Macedon, Sunbury and Gisborne.
Mr Lyon said the fundraiser walk was inspired by the idea of micro-migration.
“I read an article a few years back that was about how most artists end up migrating from a smaller location to a bigger one in pursuit of their careers,” he said.
“It is all about the little steps you have to make to take the next step. For (Bendigo students) it is often Bendigo to Melbourne.
“At ACA we are trying to aid these young artists in that same journey by giving them the tools to develop themselves to go higher in their careers.”
Mr Lyon said the walk was expected to take eight days with trekker covering between 20km and 40km each day.
“We were willing to do it because they are such good kids. The students are already knee-deep in chocolate drives, raffles and are even busking all over town,” he said.
“The towns we visit are also beautifully cultured and part of wonderful highway of art between two major centres.”
At each location, Mr Lyon, Ms Holsworth and Mr Gardner will create videos as they visit arts-based venues, galleries and workshops.
“There is places like the Theatre Royal, the Malmsbury Detention Centre’s arts program and a lot of galleries that make up a rich, remarkable tapestry,” he said.
Mr Lyon is also producing a fundraising concert to be performed at Ulumbarra on May 13.
