Bendigo Senior Secondary College student Ashleigh Speechley created three prints which depict a figure attempting to break free from the restraint and confinement of a cloth.
“My desperate, ensnared subject communicates the embodiment of this intense, all-consuming internal feeling,” Ms Speechley said.
“I aimed to explore the theme of humanity, conveying the multiple emotions and characteristics we feel as humans.
“It depicts the feeling of entrapment inside of one’s self.”
Castlemaine Secondary College Isadora Anderson created an abstract drawing of a window at her school which had multiple reflections upon it.
“I was really interested in the patterns they created and how they became abstract,” Ms Anderson said.
“I wanted to call people’s attentions to small details in the everyday world. I find joy in noticing these little details and I think it is important to pay attention to the world around you and appreciate it.”
Top Arts 2018 exhibits the artistic work of 54 of the state’s best VCE Art and VCE Studio Art students.
The other finalists for 2018 used an array of materials and techniques within their work including crochet, sculpture, papier-mâché and recycled garments.
NGV director Tony Ellwood said the exhibition celebrated the outstanding abilities of the emerging artistic talents of Victoria.
“Each year art students from across the state respond to the many social concerns pertinent to them and we are very proud to give them a platform through this annual exhibition,” Mr Ellwood said.
There were over 2,200 submissions in total.
The exhibition is at The Ian Potter Centre at NGV Australia at Federation Square and will run from March 23- July 15.
