The 24-year-old former basketballer said he headed to Bendigo confident of success and was able to conquer a quality field in Sunday night’s final.
“Probably the last four races I’ve come second or third – .the last race I ran in Geelong I ran second .003 seconds behind the winner, so I thought I would be in with a shot,” he said.
“I was just stoked to get over the line.
“It’s been a really good season, in previous years I haven’t been able to run out the 120m.
“But I’ve got a few things right and been injury free, so it’s worked out.”
It was Lugo’s fourth trip to the Bendigo carnival.
He said his win made amends for a second placing at last year’s carnival over his pet distance of 70m.
“It definitely one of the most professional (carnivals), the crowd atmosphere is second to none in Victoria,” he said.
“One hundred per-cent I will be back.”
Lugo, who trains with Team Fever at Ringwood, has only been running professionally for four years.
He was formerly a point guard with Big V club Mornington Breakers and Traralgon-based La Trobe City Energy.
