The crash occurred on Eaglehawk Road in California Gully at midnight when two men in a blue VT Commodore lost control of their car and hit a gutter, causing the car to roll and crash into a tree.
Sergeant Steve Cunningham said the two occupants of the car then fled the scene in opposite directions.
“They were travelling at a fast speed towards the Bendigo CBD and lost control near McDonalds,” he said.
“The crash caused extensive damage to the car and they were very lucky not to be dead, let alone injured,” he said.
“If it wasn’t for the decent size gum tree (that they hit), the car would have gone into a house.”
Anyone with information should contact Bendigo Police on 5448 1300.
