Artists have focused on producing work that “ingratiates” itself within the physical structures and systems of a functioning art gallery.
La Trobe Art Institute senior curator Kent Wilson said the artists were given “free reign” throughout the creative process to make artwork that reflected on what they believed an art gallery represented.
“They're artists, and as part of their art work they like to investigate architecture and the structure of institutions,” Dr Wilson said.
Artists that will be exhibiting include Agatha Gothe-Snape, Shannon Lyons, Helen Grogan, Jessie Bullivant and Benigo born artist Carolyn Eskdale.
Artworks on display at Infrastructuralism include photography, sculpture, performance and conceptual artworks.
Carolyn Eskdale’s work at the exhibition include wooden sculptures, and photographs of cardboard sculptures that interact with the gallery space and which were also made on site at the institute.
“The idea was that I work directly into the gallery space and then document what I did in each of the locations throughout the gallery,” Ms Eskdale said.
Dr Wilson is confident the exhibit will become an opportunity for people to look at things “afresh” when they go back out into the world after visiting the exhibition.
Artist Shannon Lyons created a sculpture that is a fully functioning coffee station with refrigerated milk, a hot water urn, and a station for preparing drinks.
"It is designed to blur the boundary, every time somebody comes into the exhibition and makes a cup of coffee, they're a part of the art,” Dr Wilson said.
“It is a way of breaking down the boundaries, quite often galleries can be considered austere and there’s an idea that you must be quiet and not touch anything.”
“Because we’re a university were interested in learning about what is happening within art and what is pushing the boundaries.”
The launch is on Thursday February 8 at 5:30pm at the La Trobe Art Institute.
