Investigators believe victims have been asked to make cash deposits into a bank account for a puppy, interstate transport of the puppy, insurance and registration fees.
But in the end, the victims have not received a puppy, nor their money back.
It is believed the scam dates back to the beginning of last year.
Members of the public who believe they have been a victim of this scam are encouraged to also make a report on the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network.
ACORN is a national online system that allows members of the public to report cybercrime and access information on steps they can take to protect themselves online.
Police ask anyone with information about the scam to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report online.
