Bendigo Senior Sergeant Ian Brooks said the driver of the vehicle, a 44-year-old man from Dartmoor, was negotiating a bend in the road when the single-vehicle crash occurred.
“There were no issues in relation to the vehicle being overloaded,” he said.
The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
UPDATE 11.15am: The driver of the vehicle has been taken to Bendigo hospital in a stable condition following the crash.
Acting Sergeant Lee Clayton said the white utility was towing a tandem trailer carrying another vehicle when it rounded a bend on the Bendigo-Maryborough Road about 10.40am.
He said, at this stage, it appeared the load on the trailer shifted on the 100km/h road and the driver was unable to correct the vehicle.
The utility ran off the road, collided with a tree and came to a rest on its side.
Acting Sergeant Clayton said reports initially suggested the driver was trapped, but wasn’t.
“As we’ve tried to drum home time and time again, particularly around this time of the year, everyone just needs to take their time, take their breaks, not drink and just consider the conditions, consider travel times and not rush,” he said.
“It’s better to be just five minutes late than to not make it at all.”
Motorists are being encouraged to avoid the area while crews work to clear the scene.
EARLIER: A vehicle towing a trailer has flipped on Lockwood Road and has come to a rest on its side.
