Golden Square and Bendigo CFA crews responded to the call-out to the Golden Oaks facility in Stoneham Street shortly after noon to a fire that appeared to start in the electrical component above the automatic sliding door.
A staff member put out the fire with a dry chemical extinguisher and residents were evacuated before firefighters arrived.
Firefighters ensured the fire had been fully extinguished and used a thermal imaging camera to ensure the blaze had not spread.
They also treated the staff member who extinguished the blaze with oxygen because she had inhaled some of the dry chemical and smoke.
Bendigo Health staff are attending the site to assess the situation and determine the precise cause of the fire.
