The state government has announced a $50,000 grant to support the new position, in partnership with the City of Greater Bendigo.
Member for Bendigo West, Maree Edwards, said the role would build new connections across the Aboriginal community, lead new programs for Aboriginal artists and community members, and ensure people across the region can experience First Nations art.
“The Bendigo Art Gallery plays a key role in the cultural life of this region and it’s critical that we recognise the culture and creativity of our First Peoples,” she said.
Recruitment for the role will start in early 2018.
“The Bendigo Art Gallery is one of our great local attractions and this new curator will ensure it continues to drive creativity across our proud region,” Member for Bendigo East, Jacinta Allan, said.
The government invests $150,000 a year in the gallery – funding which supports annual operations and programming.
The grant was derived from the state’s Engaging Audiences program, part of the $20 million regional arts package.
