Sergeant Mick McCrann said the collision occurred when the utility smashed into the back of the Kia wagon, which was attempting to turn right into Cashens Road.
He said the driver of the utility, a 23-year-old man from Axedale, was at fault.
Both the utility driver and the woman behind the wheel of the Kia were taken to Bendigo Health, but are not believed to be seriously injured.
Sergeant McCrann said people should expect the roads to be busier, leading into the festive season.
“This is a classic example if you fail to pay due care and attention to the road you could find yourself in this scenario,” he said.
The highway has since reopened.
UPDATE 3pm: A spokesperson for Ambulance Victoria has confirmed two people have been taken to Bendigo hospital following the crash.
The two patients were a woman in her 40s with leg injuries and a man in his 20s with upper body injuries.
UPDATE 2pm: The crash that closed the McIvor Highway at Junortoun early on Monday afternoon occurred after a driver failed to stop for another car.
Sergeant Mick McCrann, from Bendigo Highway Patrol, said a male driver in a white ute did not stop when a woman slowed to make a right-hand turn into Cashens Road.
The high-impact crash caused the woman’s car to flip.
Sergeant McCrann urged drivers to “look up and slow down”.
Two people were taken to Bendigo Health.
Police are still investigating the exact cause of the crash.
