In a internal message to Bendigo Health staff, chairman Bob Cameron said Mr Faulkner’s “breadth, depth and length” in the health industry made him stand out in a strong field of candidates.
“The board have been extremely impressed with the way he has grown into the role during the past 10 months,” Mr Cameron said.
“The emphasis Peter places on our people and on patient safety align with the values of the board and the future direction we want to set for this organisation.”
Mr Faulkner served as interim chief executive after previous CEO John Mulder stood down, and was eventually sacked in August following an investigation by the state’s Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission
IBAC said it uncovered evidence that Mr Mulder used Bendigo Health resources for his own private benefit.
In August, Mr Mulder said previous reports commissioned by Bendigo Health “confirm[ed] no wrong doing on my behalf and no case to answer”.
“I co-operated fully with the investigation and believe I presented substantive and accurate evidence to refute all of the allegations that were put to me,’’ Mr Mulder said.
“I am very proud of the achievements of my team at Bendigo Health under my leadership, particularly the successful delivery of a world-class new hospital for the Bendigo and Loddon-Mallee communites.
“I firmly believe any judgement from my peers or the people of Bendigo will conclude that I leave Bendigo Health far better placed to meet the health needs of the community than when I commenced as CEO.”
