About 32 members make up Bendigo’s navy cadets. Cadet Petty Officer David Besgrove was awarded the cadet of the year award and said the skills he had learned made him more independent.
“Originally, I got involved because I’m not a sporty kid but I like to mingle with other people and enjoy being on the water,” he said.
“So cadets was the perfect thing. I learned skills and it has opened my options to how I can participate in the community.
“Cadets bought me out of my shell. I used to be a ‘mummy's boy’ but now I’m independent and do a lot for the unit.”
Petty Officer Besgrove said he was pleased with his accomplishments.
“They are looking for cadets that stands out and show the core values of honour, honesty, courage, integrity and loyalty. Members who work as a team to accomplish the end goal,” he said.
