Herbert is in a tie for sixth, four shots off leader Cameron Davis, while Martin is one shot further back in a tie for 10th.
Herbert played in the afternoon when the conditions were tougher and shot a superb four-under par 67.
He was one of few players to play in the afternoon to break 70.
The highlight of Herbert’s opening round was a brilliant eagle on the par-five 14th – his fifth hole.
After making the turn at four-under par, back-to-back bogeys on the first and second holes threatened to derail Herbert’s round.
However, the 21-year-old bounced back strongly with birdies on the seventh and ninth to finish with the second-best round of the afternoon group.
Martin took advantage of the benign morning conditions to shoot a three-under par 68.
Kris Mueck is unlikely to make the cut after shooting a seven-over par 78 on day one.
