O’Neill coached the Thunder to 31 wins from 34 games across the Victorian Women’s Football League premier division in 2016 and the newly-formed Northern Football League women’s competition this year in which the club won the inaugural flag.
“It’s a tough decision to make, but it’s one that we’ve sat down and discussed as a family,” O’Neill said on Friday.
“I’ve got young kids and I have been involved with the club from the start (in 2011), so it’s time to take a bit of a back seat.”
O’Neill was a foundation player with the Thunder in 2011, spent 2014 as a trainer, 2015 as an assistant coach and the past two seasons as senior coach.
“It has been an amazing experience to achieve what we have over the past couple of years and see where we are now,” O’Neill said.
“I’m walking away happy and content in the decision I’ve made, but I’ll continue to support the club.”
