In its 100th year, the Mount Tarrengower Hill Climb, which featured a mix of cars and motorcycles, stuck to what it knows best.
A chicane half way up Mount Tarrengower Road was an additional fixture this year, introduced to improve safety on the course, event scrutineer Peter Valentine said.
Cars could reach up to 150km/h scaling the hill, he said.
Around 75 cars and 30 motorcycles competed in the practice session on Saturday, with the competition set for Sunday.
Bendigo Car Club helps organise and run the event and president Kevin Symons said most competitors get up the hill in under a minute.
“It’s like everything, if someone’s got something, they want to race it,” he said.
He said while the event – held on the outskirts of Maldon – was mainly for motoring enthusiasts, who came from Bendigo, Castlemaine and Melbourne, others came to have a look.
