Tuesday marks six months since registrations lapsed.
Owners of unregistered pets can be fined $289 per animal.
Dogs and cats over three months of age are required by law to be registered and microchipped with their local council.
“These registrations and microchips allow us to reunite you with your pet as soon as possible if it gets lost,” Mount Alexander acting civic compliance co-ordinator Tracey Watson said.
Registration costs $43 for most pets, or $22 for concession card holders.
Ms Watson said new pets and pets new to the shire needed to be registered.
“It is also important to let us know if you no longer have your pet,” she said.
“I know it’s not the first thing you think of when a pet passes away, however we don’t want to bother you down the track because our records still have your pet alive and well.”
She said registrations could be paid at the Civic Centre in Castlemaine, via mail, on by calling 5471 1700.
Registration forms can be downloaded from the council website.
