STRATHFIELDSAYE is celebrating a rare clean sweep of the BFNL’s three football premierships.
But it took a mammoth last quarter from the senior side against Eaglehawk to complete the flag trifecta at the QEO on Saturday.
The Storm trailed the Hawks by 20 points at three quarter-time, at which stage they had kicked just four goals for the match.
But the Storm produced a remarkable last quarter burst of nine unanswered goals to run away with a 32-point victory, 13.10 (88) to 7.14 (56).
Storm star Kallen Geary was awarded the Nalder Medal for best on ground for his top game off half-back and then when switched forward in the last quarter.
And brilliant Storm forward Lachlan Sharp can now add not only a premiership medal, but also the AFL Victoria Country Medal to his Michelsen and Ron Best medals this year.
Sharp bagged six goals, including five in the Storm’s last quarter onslaught as Strathfieldsaye’s Darryl Wilson ended his seven-year coaching tenure on the perfect note with a third flag.
Earlier in the day the Storm’s under-18s won their third premiership in a row with a 32-point win over Sandhurst.
And the Storm, which joined the BFNL in 2009, won its first reserves flag with a 40-point win, also against Eaglehawk.
The Storm are the first club since Gisborne in 2002 to win all three football flags.
Meanwhile, in the A Grade netball Sandhurst won its first premiership since 2007 as the Dragons capped a season of dominance with a 48-40 win over Golden Square.
Best on court went to Sandhurst’s 18-year-old wing attack Meg Williams.
