The works will include the installation of exit and entry ramps along the southbound carriageway of the Calder Highway, and the creation of specific parking areas for cars, trucks, caravans and buses.
Initial site preparation, including earthworks and tree removal will also occur over the coming weeks.
Approximately 390 trees, including 350 shrubs planted by VicRoads in the 1990s, will be removed.
VicRoads Regional Director Mal Kersting said VicRoads had tried avoid tree removal where possible and was now focused on repurposing trees in partnership with Landcare and local businesses.
”Through our discussions with the community and Landcare groups we have organised for suitable logs to remain on site and for some to be relocated to Landcare sites to become habitats for native animals,” he said.
“A local company is milling the timber, which will then go to Loddon Prison and a local men’s shed to be made into furniture”.
Mr Kersting said that when finished, the rest area would provide a convenient place for long-distance travellers to rest and attend to their vehicles.
“The rest area will have space to accommodate vehicles of all shapes and sizes and and will provide new toilet facilities,” he said.
“This upgrade is very important for helping to prevent fatigue, as the next rest areas along the Calder Highway are at Gisborne.”
The reserve will remain closed for the duration of construction works, which are anticipated to be completed in early 2018.
