The Demons captured their first premiership since 2008 with a 34-point win in Saturday’s fiery grand final at Serpentine.
In front of a crowd that paid a gate of $32,000, the Demons overcame a half-time deficit to win 13.16 (94) to 8.12 (60) and deny the Mean Machine an eighth premiership in a row.
It was fitting Calivil United was the club that ended Bridgewater’s premiership run given the Demons were the team the Mean Machine won their first of seven flags in a row against in 2010.
The Demons trailed by as many as 17 points during the third quarter.
However, in a stunning onslaught that propelled the Demons to the premiership, they kicked 10 unanswered goals to blow the Mean Machine away.
In his second year at the club, Calivil United’s Luke Marchesi was awarded the AFL Victoria Country Medal.
Marchesi booted four goals from the midfield, including the only three the Demons kicked in the first half.
The win capped a memorable season for Demon Ben Knight, who in the same year is both a Harding medallist and premiership captain.
Meanwhile, in the A grade netball Pyramid Hill upstaged favourites Mitiamo to win the premiership.
Pyramid Hill won 45-38 to inflict a second-straight grand final loss on the Superoos. Best on court went to Pyramid Hill goal attack Zoe Kennedy.
