The Pioneers suffered a 88-point defeat against the Oakleigh Chargers, going down 21.17 (143) to 8.7 (55) at Warrawee Park.
In a clash between a TAC Cup premiership contender and the side that will finish on the bottom of the ladder, Oakleigh charged out of the blocks, kicking the first 13 goals of the contest to quickly blow the game wide open.
The Chargers, who kicked with the breeze in the first term, had 13.7 on the board before the Pioneers kicked their first goal midway through the second quarter.
Oakleigh’s lead had been 101 points at three quarter-time, before the Pioneers fought the game out with a 5.1 to 2.6 final term.
Angus Byrne toiled hard up forward to kick four of the Pioneers’ eight goals, while the best players included Jacob Atley, Kane Farrell and Bailey Henderson.
The Pioneers round out their season next Saturday against the Greater Western Victoria Rebels, who they have to play in Ballarat again for the second time this year.
