The woman was on her way home after 1am on Sunday when she stopped at the High and Wesley streets traffic lights, attempting to turn right.
Police say a dark-coloured Commodore sedan then pulled up behind the woman’s red Falcon sedan and a man got out.
He then approached the woman’s car and smashed the back window with what was described as a jimmy bar or something similar.
Castlemaine Sergeant Rohan Scott said the window was completely shattered in the attack and showered the car in glass.
“It was an absolute total unprovoked incident,” he said.
“There’s been no incident prior to this and the parties were not known to each other.”
The victim drove off after the attack, but was followed for some distance along Crusoe Road before the offending car turned off.
Sergeant Scott said the woman and her two passengers were distressed after the attack.
“We’re calling for anyone who might have witnessed the incident or has any knowledge of the crime to contact Crime Stoppers or Castlemaine police,” he said.
