The Hawks, second-last on the ladder, produced their best performance of the season to defeat the Dragons, 12.13 (85) to 8.6 (54).
The defeat dented the Dragons’ hopes of finishing on top of the table. They’re now one game behind the Strath Storm.
Third-placed Kangaroo Flat edged out Sandhurst Marist Dockers by eight points in an entertaining clash.
The Roos trailed by five goals at the final change before kicking 6.2 to 0.1 in the final quarter to win 12.5 (77) to 10.9 (69).
In the final game of the round, Golden Square kept its finals hopes alive when it defeated South Bendigo by eight points.
In the under-14 seniors, Kyneton won the battle of the two top teams against Sandhurst.
Wayward kicking cost the Dragons dearly as the Tigers won 8.5 (53) to 5.15 (45).
In the other match, Golden Square outclassed Eaglehawk 21.15 (141) to 3.5 (23).
Three of the four under-12A matches were decided by a goal or less.
Kyneton pipped Quarry Hill by just one point in a thriller, 4.9 (33) to 4.8 (32).
Strathfieldsaye held on to top spot thanks to its two-point win over a gallant Castlemaine. The Storm won 4.4 (28) to 4.2 (26).
St Therese’s overcame a slow start to run down Maiden Gully YCW 5.10 (40) to 5.4 (34).
St Francis scored the biggest win of the round when it downed Eaglehawk by 21 points, 7.4 (46) to 4.1 (25).
Only two games were completed in the under-18 youth girls division.
Kyneton proved too strong for South Bendigo 9.5 (59) to 4.4 (28), while Golden Square kept Eaglehawk scoreless in its 39-point win.
Golden Square’s under-15 youth girls team also defended stoutly. The Bulldogs defeated Kyneton 4.4 (28) to 0.3 (3).
Strathfieldsaye kicked a massive 26.15 (171) to Eaglehawk’s 0.1 (1).
