EPSOM has jumped into top spot on the Bendigo Amateur Soccer League women’s championship ladder following a 16-0 win over Golden City.
Six Scorpions players contributed goals in the massive scoreline, with Elizabeth Watkins scoring a weekend-high of five.
That was enough for her to climb into second on the leading goal scorers list with 23 for the season, behind only Strathdale’s Ellie Vlaeminck (30), and one more than Scorpions teammate Tara Thomas (22).
Paige Gordon scored four goals and Caitlin Robertson added three for the Scorpions, who overtook former ladder leader Shepparton United, which had the bye.
The Scorpions and Shepparton United meet this Sunday at Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve in a game likely to decide the championship.
Both teams have 12 wins and one loss, with Epsom boasting the better goal differential 67 to 63.
The Scorpions will be aiming to avenge an earlier season 3-1 loss to United, which had occupied top spot for the previous five weeks.
Their 16-0 win was the second time this year the Scorpions had kept Golden City scoreless following an 8-0 victory in round five.
Moama-Echuca Border Raiders retained their grip on third spot with a 3-0 win over Colts United.
Natalie Sands scored twice for the Border Raiders in the eighth and 63rd minutes, while Cameron Yeates added another in the 68th minute to seal the win.
Eaglehawk climbed to fourth position with a 6-4 win against Strathdale at Truscott Reserve.
Maika Ruyter-Hooley and Tara Archbold scored twice for the Hawks, who also got a goal from Charlotte Edlin as well as an own goal.
For the Blues, Ellie Vlaeminck continued her stellar season with a double, while Lucy Teal scored once.
At McEwen Reserve in Shepparton, Spring Gully United and Shepparton South drew 1-1.
Ally Van Dalen opened the scoring for Spring Gully with a goal in the 19th minute.
Brioni Serafini equalised for Shepparton South in the 42nd minute, with neither side able to convert in the second half despite some solid chances.
The result was a good measure of improvement for the Reds, who were beaten 3-0 earlier in the season by Shepparton South.
In other games this weekend, Strathdale hosts Colts United at Beischer Reserve, Shepparton South meets Swan Hill at McEwen Reserve, Spring Gully United and Eaglehawk clash at Stanley Avenue, while Golden City and Moama-Echuca have byes.
