Castlemaine Acting Sergeant Dave Becker said the 82-year-old was herding livestock on his Polaris ATV when it hit a stump.
The man then became stuck in the foot well and was unable to get himself out.
Police, Ambulance Victoria, Country Fire Authority and State Emergency Service crews were all called to the rural property on the Sutton Grange-Redesdale Road in Sutton Grange.
Acting Sergeant Becker said the ATV remained upright in the crash, but SES crews had to assist the man in getting out.
He said driving into the sun was believed to be the main cause of the crash and WorkSafe had been notified of the incident.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson confirmed the man was taken to Bendigo hospital.
