Police said the man entered the Pakenham Street house through an unlocked door about 1.30am and took car keys, a garage remote and an iPhone from the kitchen.
Sergeant John Trebilcock said the pair exchanged words before the man fled on foot and the victim called police.
A 19-year-old Echuca man was arrested by police a short distance from the house and will be charged on summons for aggravated burglary.
Sergeant Trebilcock urged people to keep their houses locked and valuables secure.
