The incident occurred at The Metropolitan Hotel in Bendigo, formerly known as Puggs, in Bull Street about 10.45pm on Friday.
Security staff restrained the offender until police arrived, but the victim left the scene before police could obtain his details.
“We need to put a stop to these potentially deadly coward punches,” police wrote in a social media post.
A 30-year-old Bendigo man has been charged with recklessly causing injury, and bailed to attend the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court at a later date.
Senior Constable Paul Tobin said he wished to speak to the victim or anyone else who witnessed the assault and asked that they call the Bendigo Police Station on 5448 1300.
