Police were called to the scene on Jennings Street, St Arnaud, at 2.50am.
It is alleged a man gained access to the non-24 hour police station and caused extensive damage once inside.
A 46-year-old St Arnaud man was arrested at the scene and is in custody.
No one was injured during the incident.
A St Arnaud resident said the station was fenced off, with its windows boarded up.
The police station will remain closed while repairs are completed.
