The Transport Accident Commission is calling on country drivers to slow down as we leave behind a mild autumn for a blast of wintry weather.
Cold fronts, which moved across the state at the weekend, have sent temperatures plummeting and the chilly weather is expected to continue.
Bendigo will see out May with the last few days bringing maximum temperatures of between 13 and 14 degrees, with the chance of showers and hail also forecast.
TAC road safety director Samantha Cockfield said the wintry conditions magnified the dangers of driving on country roads.
“Speed and fatigue are common factors in regional road fatalities at any time of year,” Ms Cockfield said.
“Slowing down, staying alert and driving to the conditions becomes even more important when weather and road conditions are poor.”
Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Keris Arndt said Saturday was the last of the warmer days for the state, as winter set in.
Lows of one and zero degrees are forecast in Bendigo by the end of the week, with morning frost also expected.
Ms Cockfield said motorists could prevent a tragedy by making safe choices when driving.
"Reducing speed, allowing a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front and eliminating distractions are all key safety tips to remember," she said.
“Instead of taking the back roads to save five minutes, sticking to the main roads and highways can help ensure you get to your destination safely.”
Ms Cockfield said vehicle safety also played a pivotal role in reducing road trauma.
“Make sure your tyres and brakes are in good condition, ensure all lights are working and use headlights in low visibility,” she said.
Bendigo Senior Sergeant Ian Brooks encouraged drivers to also think about buying the safest car they could afford.
“The safer vehicles are vehicles fitted with features like lane departure warnings, fog lights, stability control,” he said.
“Those systems that are fitted to a lot of affordable cars are things that will help save lives.”
Five tips for safe winter driving
- Ensure tyres are in good condition;
- Get plenty of rest before your journey;
- Brake gently;
- Turn your lights on, even during the day; and
- Reduce your speed in fog, mist or slippery conditions.
