A STRONG cold front over central Victoria will rapidly cross the state on Wednesday morning.
The Bureau of Meteorology has updated a severe weather warning for people in the central, east Gippsland, south-west, northern country, north-central, north-east, west and south Gippsland and parts of the Wimmera forecast districts.
West to north-westerly winds will shift colder south-westerly behind the front.
Isolated thunderstorms are a risk near and following the front, particularly across southern and mountain areas, and should clear from the west by the early afternoon.
Damaging winds, averaging 60-70 km/h with peak gusts of about 90 km/h, are possible near thunderstorms.
Squalls of 70-80 km/h are a risk for the south-west, central, and west and south Gippsland districts near coastal areas in southerly winds, extending to coastal east Gippsland during the afternoon.
Winds will gradually ease from the west by early evening.
Across the region, there is a high chance of showers on Wednesday – Bendigo has a top of 13, Maryborough 12, Castlemaine 11, Redesdale 13, and Echuca 14.
The severe weather warning for the Mallee has been cancelled.
The State Emergency Service advises people should:
- Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
- Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony; and
- Keep clear of fallen power lines

A SEVERE weather warning is in place for much of Victoria, with damaging winds forecast.
The Bureau of Meteorology predicts a strong cold front will reach the west coast late Tuesday and rapidly cross the state to the far north-east on Wednesday morning.
West to north-westerly winds will shift colder south-westerly behind the front, becoming strong and squally near the coast.
Isolated thunderstorms are a risk near the front, continuing in the south behind the front.
Damaging winds, averaging 60-70 km/h with peak gusts of about 100 km/h, are possible near thunderstorms.
The bureau issued a warning for people in the central, east Gippsland, south-west, northern country, north-central, north-east, west and south Gippsland, Wimmera and parts of the Mallee forecast districts at 2.10pm on Tuesday.
Squalls of 70-80 km/h are a risk for the south-west, central, and west and south Gippsland districts near coastal areas in southerly winds.
Winds will gradually ease from the west through Wednesday afternoon.
The State Emergency Service advises people should:
- Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
- Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony; and
- Keep clear of fallen power lines
The next severe weather warning will be issued by 11pm on Tuesday.
