A year later they would become netball teammates at Calivil United.
In the years since they have played in a premiership together, assisted each other as coaches, watched each other's children grow, and now become co-captains of the Demons' B-grade team.
So, it's only fitting that their 300th game milestones are celebrated together.
And that's what the Demons will do on Good Friday when they take to the court against Maiden Gully YCW.
Lawry and Wagner, both 42, are an important part of the fabric of the family club that is Calivil United.
Lawry (nee Freemantle) comes from a long line of family, including her father, brother, sisters, cousins, nephews and nieces, who have all played for the Demons over the years.
She started playing minis in 1984, spent two years in juniors in 1988-89, before making the leap to seniors the following year when she was 15.
She spent her first year in B-grade, which coincided with a premiership, before she embarked a long A-grade career.
The Demons' 1993 A-grade premiership remains a highlight for Lawry, who quickly carved a reputation as an accurate goal shooter, before she transitioned to defence.
Her many personal accolades include two A-grade best and fairest awards, one junior best and fairest and four runner-up awards.
In 2002, Lawry had her first season off in nearly two decades to give birth to her first daughter Jasmine.
She returned for three more years, but again stopped to give birth to Keira.
Lawry would not return to the netball court until her third daughter, Jorja had reached three.
When the LVFNL introduced C-reserve in 2012, Lawry was again pulled back into action, initially as a fill-in, before quickly becoming a regular and winning the club best and fairest.
A back injury sustained on the farm she runs with husband 'Jack', sidelined her for the entire 2013 season.
A calf injury sidelined her again in 2015, but Lawry was back last season to play alongside her sisters Erin Boyd and Lauren Rogers for the first time.
The Demons would finish just two goals shy of a fairytale premiership to Bridgewater.
For Lawry, getting to play with her sisters and good friend Wagner last season ranks alongside playing in an A-grade premiership with her best friend Trine (Miles) Gee as 18-year-olds as career highlights - as does playing one game last season with Gee.
"(The sisters) have always been at the club, but it had just never lined up all three of us playing together," he she said.
"My sister (Lauren) had a baby, so we thought she was no chance of coming back, but when Erin and I were playing she decided to come back."
The family link through Calivil continues, with Jasmine, 15, playing in the 17-and-under team, and Keira, 11, and Jorja, playing in the minis team coached by their mum.
Wagner (nee Smith) introduction to netball came not at Calivil, but at Serpentine in the minis in 1996.
After playing in that clubs junior premierships in 1987-88, she crossed to the Demons where she played in the'89 junior grand final and won the first of her seven club best and fairests.
The following year she played in her first Calivil United premiership in juniors and in 1991 she made the step up to A and B grades.
Back-to-back B-grade premierships in 1989-90 preceded a two-year stint at university before she returned to play A-grade in 1995.
Wagner spent a season each at Dyrsdale and Boort in '97-'98, but returned to Calivil United where she has remained since in a mixture of capacities, from player and mentor, including a senior coaching stint in '99, to umpires co-ordinator, social co-ordinator and committee member.
Wagner has missed only three seasons as a player since '99, for the birth of her daughter Trista (2004) and son Riley (2008) and year spent travelling around Australia in 2002.
She is slated to play both A and B grades this season.
Wagner, whose daughter Trista is now playing in the 15-and-under team, cannot imagine a life with the Calivil Football Netball Club.
Fortunately for the Demons, she has no intention of leaving the Demons once her playing days are done.
"The friends you make always bring you back here, including the new friendships," she said.
"It's very much a family club and good at welcoming new members.
"It's just a really friendly place - as long as I have kids here I will always be involved."
JEANNIE WAGNER ON NICKY LAWRY
"Nicky is a steady reliable player on the court, always gives 100 per cent. Calm, cool and collected under pressure. She's a defender, who's very tight in her defence. She's been a great friend to me - I always love having her on the court."
NICKY LAWRY ON JEANNIE WAGNER
"We've been friends a long time and have run the minis together the last three years. Jeannie is the fittest girl at the club. We're the oldest at the club, but she's by far the fittest. She is really well organised, friendly - a great person to have around."
