A second Bendigo screening of A Plastic Ocean will take place at The Old Church on the Hill, followed by a meeting of the Towards Zero Waste Action Group.
Chris Corr of the Bendigo Sustainability Group, which organised the screening, said a significant amount of the plastic we use each day enters our oceans.
He said A Plastic Ocean highlighted the disastrous effects the disintegration of plastic has on all types of wildlife living in and around the world’s oceans.
Mr Corr said the first screening, last month at Bendigo Cinemas, had inspired the re-invigoration of the Towards Zero Waste Action Group.
“We witnessed so much passion and energy from attendees to come together and to make substantial improvements to our sustainability by minimising the use of resources, minimising waste entering our environment and in doing so minimising financial and other costs to the community,” he said.
“Some ideas already being discussed for the group to address could include, reusable shopping bags, reusable coffee cups and crockery for the Bendigo City Centre area and the possible establishment of a Wash Against Waste vehicle to significant reduce the impact of single use items at public events.”
He said the screening had helped inspire Boort resident Peter Mitchell to form a Plastic Ocean Foundation in Australia.
Sunday’s screening of A Plastic Ocean starts at 6.15pm, with pizza from 5.45pm.
The Towards Zero Waste Action Group meeting starts at 8pm.
The screening costs $5 for non-BSG members and is free for BSG members.
