Three CFA units and three police cars attended the scene at the corner of Elliott and Elm streets, Golden Square, from about 12.45pm.
Kangaroo Flat CFA captain Adam Melis said the evacuations were only a precaution.
“A car has accidentally struck a gas meter that connects to a house. The top has come off it and we have seal it off,” he said.
“We evacuated houses downwind of the leak. With the northerly wind, we had to make sure anyone downwind was evacuated as a precaution.
“The concentration of gas wasn't too bad according to the gas detection unit.”
CFA and police units left the scene at about 1.30pm when gas company employees arrived to seal the leak.
“The break is down at the solid steel pipe but we have to wait for the gas company to come in and clamp that,” Captain Melis said.
