But the switch on the sidelines did not come without its share of positives, most notably with some greater potency in attack and as a consequence a stronger impact on the scoreboard.
City's two goals scored in a 4-2 loss to the Goulburn Valley Suns was arguably their most impressive effort to date this season, rivalling a one-all draw the previous week against East division rivals Richmond SC.
But if Bendigo City is to work its way up the standings from its current last place it is at some point going to have to stop leaking goals.
Unfortunately for City, by the time Daniel Purdy slotted the team's first goal, the Suns already had four on the board, including three in quick succession between the 45th and 52nd minutes.
To their credit, City did not bow their heads and, with Charlie McCormick adding his first goal of the season, pulled the margin back to a respectable 4-2.
The road ahead does get easier for City, with a clash against second last team Werribee City set for this Saturday.
The Bees are the only other team in the west division without a win and will enter the contest with two draws and four losses alongside their name.
Meanwhile, Bendigo City narrowly missed posting its first win in the youth under-20 competition, losing to the Suns 1-nil.
In junior games against St Albans, Bendigo lost 8-nil to the Saints in the under-18s, drew 1-all in the under-16s, drew 2-2 in the under-15s, lost 2-1 in the under-14s and lost 7-1 in under-13s.
Goal scorers were Caden Meeks (under-16), Joshua Woods (under-15), Thomas Whitehead (under-14) and Jacob Floyd (under 13).
