Some 800 brigade members from across Victoria, interstate and even New Zealand have descended on Bendigo for the occasion, which sees them compete in events that test their speed, strength, agility and teamwork skills.
At the end of the second day on Sunday Kangaroo Flat led in the overall points aggregate in the A section, but was only two points ahead of Maryvale.
The team broke the record in the Y coupling and ladder eights event by 0.48 seconds.
But it was perhaps Kangaroo Flat’s Jackson Dargaville who gave the most impressive performance, winning the prestigious ladder race for the seventh time in a row – the first person to do so in the championships’ history.
Golden Square is currently placed sixth in B section, while Eaglehawk’s second team is coming third in C section.
Eaglehawk’s two teams have won the hose, hydrant and pumper event in A and C sections.
The competition concludes on Monday with some of the most esteemed events of the championships, the last being the interstate challenge between Victoria and Western Australia, which will take place about 1pm.
The event has now been held for 134 years and this year has marked the 30th time Bendigo has hosted it.
To mark the milestone, each competitor will receive a commemorative medal, sponsored by the City of Greater Bendigo.
The championships are open for free to spectators from the public and are taking place at Weeroona Oval.
