Nearly 100 players took to the fairways of the picturesque Belvoir Park Golf Club in the 4BBB Stableford event with the Needs duo scoring 47 points to scrape home by just one point from the team of Mark Smith and Bernie Donegan.
Other good scores came from Craig Goddard and Lachlan McNee (46 points), Trevor Curram and Graham Robertson (45), Brian Griffiths and Des Leahy (44), Nathan Emerson and Bill Emerson (43) and Ian Robertson and Sue Robertson (42).
This year's field was boosted by the appearance of big hitting Bendigo professional Lucas Herbert, who played a solid round as he prepared for this week’s New Zealand Open.
Herbert flew out of Melbourne on Monday and said he was confident of producing his best golf in the $1 million open starting Thursday.
Highlight of the day was the $100 super pin awards won by Mark Alford (3rd), George Clark (5th), Geoff Bowyer (8th), Des Lehy (11th) and Snowy Needs (16th).
