The Pioneers went down to the Bushrangers, 13.5 (83) to 2.1 (13), in Saturday’s first match of the new competition. Elizabeth Snell created history by becoming the first Pioneer to kick a goal in the new league, while Bridie Kinghorne added Bendigo’s second goal.

“Murray had a lot of 17 and 18-year-old’s and they were just too big and strong for us,’’ McCormick said.
“Our girls tried hard all day and put in a great effort. We had a 20-minute patch where we controlled the game, but we just couldn’t capitalise on the scoreboard.
“The game was a good education for our girls. When things started to go against us, the girls dropped off in the areas they’d been so good at in practice matches like working back to help the defense. We’ll be better for it.”
Aisling Tupper and Luca Gallo were Bendigo’s best players.
