Martin fired a bogey-free five-under par 66 to be one shot behind a group of four players at six-under par.
Fellow Bendigo professional Kris Mueck also made an encouraging start to the $125,000 tournament.
Mueck had six birdies and two bogeys in his opening round of four-under par 67 to be tied for ninth.
