The school received the Premier’s Recognition Award after winning the education category at the 2016 Premier’s Sustainability Awards.
Students’ work on the Students Leading Change WFPS Sustainability Program was recognised at the awards.
The program aims to reduce the school’s carbon footprint by incorporating sustainable practices within the school and community.
Students are encouraged to undertake sustainability initiatives that reduce waste, water and energy consumption.
In the past 12 months, Winters Flat has saved 1.18 million litres of water, reduced their energy consumption from 56,023kwh to 42,893kwh and increased their habitat score from 42 in 2014 to 55 in 2015.
The school has also increased its biodiversity by working with their local council on waste projects, planting a Bird Scope and Bush Tucker garden, along with many other sustainable initiatives.
Student leaders have also engaged with other schools in the Youth Leading the World Congress and enacted whole school policies as part of the program.
Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards today joined the school last week to congratulate them on their award.
“Winters Flat Primary School is leading by example on how young people can learn and adapt sustainable initiatives into their everyday routines,” Ms Edwards said.
“This award recognises all their hard work on making their school and local community more sustainable.
“These students are champions of change – they are taking action to make their school and their planet a more sustainable and enjoyable place to be.
“I’m proud that we can acknowledge and encourage such great work.”
The school joined the Victorian Government’s ResourceSmart Schools program in 2012 and was the first school in the Loddon Mallee region to achieve 5 Star Certification.
It was also crowned ResourceSmart School of the Year in 2015.
