The Bendigo trio played the creek course, which played slightly easier than the beach course on day one at Barwon Heads.
Herbert made birdies on five of his first seven holes, which laid the foundation for his fine five-under par 67.
The 21-year-old ended the day just three shots behind leader David Bransdon, who shot a brilliant eight-under par 64.
Mueck overcame a slow start to post a three-under par 69.
After being one-over par through six holes, an eagle on the par-five seventh hole changed the momentum of Mueck’s round.
Further birdies on the 13th and 17th saw Mueck finish day one inside the top 20.
Martin had the tougher conditions in the afternoon, but he posted a solid one-under par 71.
Martin’s round consisted of four birdies and three bogeys.
