The festival and new year celebrations also begin the Year of the Rooster on the Chinese calendar.
Guests will have the unique opportunity to see the Bendigo Chinese Association’s three new lions and witness the culturally significant Hoi Gong Ceremony.
A Hoi Gong Ceremony is undertaken on new lions and signifies the lion’s awakening into this world.
Bendigo Joss House Temple supervisor Darren Wright said Chinese New Year is considered the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays.
“We have chosen to celebrate it with a lantern festival, a tradition in China stretching back some 2000 years,” he said.
Bendigo Joss House Temple tours, tea tastings, Chinese calligraphy and biscuit making activities will also be available on the evening and guests will be treated to performances by the Plum Blossom dancers.
Gates open at 6.30pm with the festivities starting at 7pm. Entry is a gold coin donation.
