BENDIGO boxer Tully Scanlon has started the year on a winning note.
The reigning Australian junior 54 kilogram champion won a unanimous points decision against South Australian fighter Connor Read at the Dom Polski Centre in Adelaide last Saturday night.
Read is the reigning South Australian 52 kilogram champion.
Scanlon's coach Danniel Burton, from the Golden Square-based Hit Factory Boxing Gym, said the teenager was "rusty as expected" after being out of the ring and unable to get a bout in the six months since his national title win.
"Also being on the road since 8am driving and flying and weighing in at 5pm all while trying to make sure we were under weight also plays a big part in fatigue and performance," Burton said.
"Connor was competitive for the first bit of each round then Tully's work rate and angles of punches started settling in and he looked comfortable.
"We are hoping to get a match in next week's state titles."
Burton said Scanlon would consider stepping up a weight if there was nobody to face at his preferred flyweight 52kg.
