Buchanan completed the 10km duel on the Stromlo Forest course near Canberra in 30.30 minutes and was eighth overall.
Traditionally the top six are chosen for the world titles.
Buchanan was just 11 seconds adrift of the sixth placegetter in an event where Brett Robinson, 29.42, won.
It was Buchanan’s first attempt at the national trials. Athletes completed four laps on a course which has plenty of rolling hills.
“I ran the course in last year’s national champs. It’s a purpose-built cross-country course and a fantastic venue. It was a great experience.”
Buchanan has more goals to pursue in the next few months.
A dual winner of the Backmarkers Mile, Buchanan may race at the Bendigo International Madison carnival in March. The world cross-country championships will be run on March 26 in Uganda.
