A BENDIGO woman is facing a charge of dangerous driving causing death in relation to a fatal crash in Moama almost one year ago, in which a 22-year-old Bendigo woman was killed.
Police allege the driver, Tyrian Andrews, 20, on her learner’s permit at the time, was driving with an illicit drug and alcohol present in her system when the crash occurred just before 3am on February 13 last year.
Andrews appeared in the Deniliquin Local Court on October 4, and will next appear on February 7.
Because dangerous driving causing death is an indictable offence, she will need to be committed to the District Court in New South Wales before either sentencing or to contest the charges before a jury. She is yet to enter a plea to the charges.
Andrews has also been charged with driving in a manner dangerous, negligent driving occasioning death, driving a vehicle while under the influence of an illicit drug and driving as a learner while not accompanied by a full-licence holder.
Police allege she was driving with alcohol in her system as a learner driver – a further charge.
A spokesperson for New South Wales Police confirmed Andrews was charged in August.
The crash occurred on Perricoota Road, Moama, when the Renault hatchback Andrews was driving left the road and struck a tree.
The 22-year-old passenger, Stephanie Pitson, died at the scene.
Andrews was airlifted to The Alfred in Melbourne with serious injuries, including injuries to her head and abdomen.
The women were in the area for the Southern 80 Ski Race on the Murray River at Echuca-Moama.
Dangerous driving causing death carries a maximum penalty of 14 years jail.
