Eight Game Management Authority customers received personal data about customers who were renewing their game licenses.
The department has attributed the data breach to human error and said it was confident the information had either been deleted or was never received due to its file size.
Shooters, Fishers and Farmers MP Jeff Bourman said the error had put at risk the security and privacy of thousands of licensed firearms owners.
“It is unacceptable this data breach has even occurred,” he said.
The department has notified police and the Privacy and Data Protection Commissioner.
License renewal processes and customer service staff training will be reviewed.
Use of email to communicate about license renewals has been suspended.
