RSPCA Victoria will waive adoption fees for cats for four days this week.
From Thursday, January 19 to Sunday, January 22, the normal $120 fee will not apply to cats four months old and over.
Chief executive officer Dr Liz Walker said with kitten season in full swing, many adult cats were overlooked.
“These cats don’t belong in shelters, they belong in homes,” Dr Walker said.
All RSPCA adoption cats and kittens are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed, flea treated and come with a two-week health cover for shelter related medical issues.
Dr Walker urged cat owners to desex their pets to reduce the number of cats and kittens that ended up in shelters.
“A constant cycle of overpopulation places undue pressure on the families, friends and workmates who are asked to find homes for these unplanned kittens, otherwise they end up in shelters such as ours,” she said.
The RSPCA says normal adoption procedures will apply during the no-fee period, with effort going into matching the right cat with the right family.
