VicRoads regional director Mal Kersting said contractors would begin exploration works ahead of a future upgrade between Weeroona Avenue and Scott Street in White Hills.
A number of trucks would carry out excavation works to identify and confirm the location of existing services, including telecommunications, electricity, gas, water mains and sewer pipes.
Because the original services were installed many years ago there was some uncertainty about their exact location and depth, Mr Kersting said.
Most of the work would take place to the side of the road and there would be no traffic lane closures.
However VicRoads would be managing traffic and changing speed limits in the vicinity of work areas.
Works were planned from Wednesday 4th to Tuesday 10th January 2017.
