The Peg Leg Road brigade’s annual presentation dinner, held at the Bendigo RSL, was attended by 120 members and guests.
Among the guests were Emergency Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley, Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria board member Bill Maltby and Region 2 operations officer Chris Jacobson.
Four long-time servants, Eric Smith, Peter Trew, Joseph Benbow and Ray Miles, were awarded CFA life memberships, while Ross White, Duncan Murley and Sarah Murley received brigade life memberships.
Lieutenant Duncan Murley said the presentation dinner recognised not only those members who fought fires, but everyone who played a role in keeping the 100 per cent volunteer brigade operating.
“These men and women have contributed to the community in a large way,” he said.
Lieutenant Murley said the brigade was always looking for new members to join what he described as a “really tight family”.
“We’re pushing hard for juniors at the moment,” he said. “It’s a great thing for juniors aged between 11 and 16 to be involved with. They can learn all sorts of skills for not just firefighting but the competitions we run as well.”
Meanwhile, the brigade is busy preparing for what promises to be a long, hot fire season.
“We’re hoping for the best but planning for the worst,” Lieutenant Murley said.
