The fundraiser was for the Beccky Johns Kidney Research Discovery Trust, which funds research into the affect medication can have on transplant patients.
Beccky Johns, a Bendigo girl who was born with a kidney donation, died last year after developing lymphoma as a side effect from her medication.
Her family, parents Sue and Paul and sister Tara, have been fundraising for the Beccky Johns Fund ever since.
Sunday saw the major part of their fundraising efforts with a walk around Kennington Reservoir.
“We always had a ball park figure of getting about 200 people and I think we matched that and possibly exceeded it. So we are really proud of that,” Sue Johns said.
“While we are really excited a lot of people here we know, it is nice to see people we don't know as well.”
As of Saturday evening the fundraiser had raised $5000 with additional funds also to be added to the total tally.
Earlier in the year the Johns also hosted an open house after their home was renovated by Channel 9’s Reno Rumble teams.
They have also hosted other smaller events during the year.
Mrs Johns said the fundraiser walk also marked the first anniversary of Beccky’s passing.
“Beccky was born with kidney condition and we did two transplants. Paul made a donation and I did as well, Mrs Johns said.
“She was happy, working for Kidney House and then she developed lymphoma. She was diagnosed in September last year and we lost her two days after 23rd birthday in November.”
Mrs Johns said Beccky, who worked for Kidney Health in Melbourne, was bursting with happiness.
“She worked for Kidney Health, which was her dream job, travelled to America and was bursting with happiness,” she said.
“We hope this becomes an annual fundraiser. We want the Beccky Johns Fund to be known like the Jane McGrath Foundation is known.”
