FULL COVERAGE: Bendigo Cup 2016
A CRACK at the Wimmera's richest race is among the options for talented Bendigo sprinter Glenrowan Prince.
The five-year-gelding was a close up fifth in a 1100m benchmark 78 handicap on Cup day, after leading the field into the straight and finishing within two lengths of the winner Chase The Horizon.
Trainer Kym Hann said the effort was a good improvement on his recent disappointing run earlier this month when beaten by six lengths at Cranbourne over 1000m.
"He never got around Cranbourne - it's a tight track," he said.
"But here on a big spacious track he's run something like his best.
"It's a tough track here to lead all the way and get away with it, you have every opportunity to get run down, but he did a good job."
Hann said he had been wanting to step Glenrowan Prince up in distance and the $70,000 China Bowl at Ararat on November 6 loomed as the ideal opportunity.
“Its a good race, worth a bit of money and he’ll get down in the weights, so we might have a throw att he stumps,” he said.
Before yesterday Glenrowan Prince had won five of 16 career starts and been placed four times.
“He’s a tough little horse,” he said.
Glenrowan Prince was ridden yesterday by Bendigo jockey Patrick Holmes.
